About
My name is Rita Piano. I am an Italian self-taught traditional painter and illustrator from Sardinia, currently living in a small country near Pavia. My work is predominantly, profoundly inspired by nature, folk and fairy tales, myths, legends, and also music, animals, landscapes, especially the astonishing natural beauty of the Isle and country where I was born and raised, with its mountains and trees, the ever blowing wind, the magic of woods, stones, old houses, roads and paths that carry me away with ancient memories and echos of the past.
I also draw inspirational flow from my personal life, family and friends, people’s faces, lives and stories, the deep breathtaking sky above and the gold honey-coloured light of my childhood afternoons as the fairy enchanted night dreams from whom I derive visionary, imaginative inspiration.
Whenever possible I spend most of my time in the studio, which is an open room in my home where I work using an array of materials such as watercolour, gouache, coloured pencils, graphite, oils, and less often acrylic and ink.
Art is for me a blessed never ending instant of inspiration, enchantment, a spark of love and truth and a gateway to a magic, fairy land where all souls can meet in deep communion of the heart; a timeless, peaceful, suspended elsewhere and a meanwhile of eternity, light and beauty.
Art is my safe sacred place in this world.
